Declarer Play

  • Count your tricks
    • If you have all the tricks you need to make the contract,
      • pull trump and play them out
    • If you do not have all the tricks with your high cards
      • Where might the missing cards be placed?
        • Can you finesse a missing high card?  Don’t forget to finesse for Jacks and 10 cards!
      • Where are there suit length differences?
        • Can you pull trump?
        • Can you discard a loser to a long suit in the other hand?
      • Discard a loser on a loser from opposition’s play.
  • Reentry into Dummy:
    • Play high cards from the short side hand
    • Reserve winners in dummy for reentry
    • Identify additional long suit to act like trump – Count cards in suit!
  • Look for possible finesses
  • Identify cards for transferring lead between hands
  • Pair up honor cards in one hand with the card you’ll play in the other hand to avoid wasting an honor on an honor
    • When deciding which honor to take a trick with, give some thought to any honors the opponents may have so that your remaining honor will cover their’s.
    • Good for discarding sloughing off a looser
  • Don’t lead back suit lead until trump have been pulled.
    • This will be a short suit or contributing to a winner for your  opponents.
