Responses to One of a Major

ACBL suggests:

  • Count your points
    • Count your high card points, then
    • ADD length points (extra trump (very valuable)
    • Add shortness (singletons and doubletons) ONLY AFTER  A SUIT CONTRACT is set.  Shortness is a determent in NTt contracts.
    • MINUS worthless singletons and doubletons

Responder cannot introduce a new suit at the 2-level unless the hand meets both requirements:

  • Strength – 11 points
  • Length – 5-cards

Limit Bids (communicating points & fit)

With 0-5 points:

  • With 0 pts, short distribution, and 6 card trump support, bid game. (SAYC)
  • Otherwise, pass.

With 6-9 points:

  • Without 3 trump support,
    • bid 1NT (even with a 5 card suit, communicates limited point value of hand.)
    • bid a negative double, which will emphasize the other major.
  • With 3 card trump support, raise to 2 level
  • If partner bids 1 and you have at least 4 in your hand, bid 1. (A new suit is forcing; partner cannot pass)]

Suitable shapes for game:
