Overcalls

An overcall is your bid, following your opponents opening bid.  In an overcall situation, you are opening for your partnership and should have opening point value in your hand, although at the 1 level you can open a little light in some situations.

Tip:  The fewer your HCPs, the more they need to be in your suit.

  • 1 followed by 1 is a normal opening.
  • 1 followed by 2 is a weak two  (This is a jump to level 2 when level 1 is still available.)
  • 1 followed by 2 would be a 2/1 natural bid of diamonds.
  • 1 followed by 1NT is a regular 1NT hand.
  • 1NT opener requires 16 to 18 points.
